GSA Earth Sciences Student Symposium 12-16 October 2020

A chance for Earth and Marine Science students from Tasmania to get together and discuss their research in a welcoming and fun environment!

At GESSS-TAS we're hoping to help earth and marine scientists build relationships and develop skills to stay strong in a turbulent world. For some this is the first conference you attend in your academic career and we are excited to see what you've been doing and help you find your way.

We want to help you showcase your research to the broader academic, government and industry communities.

AEDT 17:00 - 19:30

The Geological Society of Australia Earth Sciences Student Symposium – Tasmania (GESSS-TAS) 2020 will be hosted virtually on Tuesday October 13th. This conference is designed to bring students and young researchers from around Tassie together to present new research, technology, and ideas related to earth science. The event is student organised and designed to provide students with an opportunity to develop their science communications skills to a broad audience, facilitate peer learning, peer feedback, and networking opportunities for students and researchers in Tasmania.

This is a free event for all students (Ph.D, Masters, Honours and Undergraduate) and GSA members. Following the presentations, there will also be an opportunity to network with other attendees and presenters.

The symposium will run over the course of 2.5 hours. There will be a range of talks around 8-10 minutes long, each with 3-5 minutes discussion time

I am an honours student at the University of Tasmania, studying Environmental Geology (hydrogeology). My honours project is investigating the transport of Acid Mine Drainage in groundwater at a legacy tin mine in northeast Tasmania. This is my first time getting involved in organising a GSA event and my first GESSS, so I am really keen to hear about everyone’s research!

I am a Volcanology PhD student at the University of Tasmania. My research is focused on highly explosive (Plinian) eruptions of basaltic magma. When I’m not in the office, I’m in the field climbing volcanoes and collecting samples! Tassie is teeming with interesting young earth scientists, so I am very excited to help them share their research and to grow GESSS Tasmania!

I am an Economic Geology PhD student with CODES at the University of Tasmania. My research is focused on understanding the phyllic alteration domain at the Northparkes porphyry system in New South Wales. I’m looking forward to getting involved in this year’s GESSS and seeing all the interesting research which is going on!
